Government

In Costa Rica, the Legislative Assembly appoints the Supreme Court judges. Their terms are a minimum of eight years. You already know that Costa Rica has seven provinces, each are ruled by a governor. That governor is appointed by the president.

elections

The number of deputies for each province is determined by the provinces population. They determine by saying one member for each 30, 000 people. As basically everywhere, Costa Rica has a national election every four years. They have that election on the first Sunday in February.

Some Facts

Costa Rica, along with alot of other countries, signed a free trade agreement with the United States. Costa Rica's government is basically the same as the United States. It is divided into independent executive. It's divided into the legislative and judicial branches.

Leaders

Costa Rica's Government has many parties and leaders. Some of them are Jose Miguel Corrales Bolanos, who is the leader of the National Liberation Party. Vladimir De La Cruz de Lemos, who is the leader of the Democratic Force Party. Rodrigo Gutierrez Schwanhauser, who is the leader of the New Democratic Party. I'm not going to name them all so the last one is Federico Malavasi Calvo, who is the leader of the Libertarian Movement Party.

What kind of government is it?

Costa Rica is a democratic republic. The 1949 Constitution stated that. This means that it gives the citizens and foreigners equal treatment. It also gives them the right to own property, the right of petition and assembly, freedom of speech, and the right to habeas corpus. Habeas corpus is the legal right to apply for a written command or legal authority.

Oil is one of Costa Rica's nonrenewable resources.

Mining in Costa Rica

There are many minerals in Costa Rica. Some of them are diatomite, lime, pumice, silver, marine salt, crushed stone, sand and gravel. Those were all mined in 2001. Mineral production in 2001 contained of cement, common clays, sandstone, and limestone.

Land Utilization

As you can see, there is lots of dense broadleaf evergreen forests in Costa Rica.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

Costa Rica has a score of 100 out of 112 on the Integrated Waste Management scale. Integrated Waste means that many different types of waste comes together to make one big place full of mixed garbage.

Water is another renewable resource of Costa Rica. There are many water ecosystems in Costa Rica.

These trees take a very long time to grow in the forest. Then the logs turn into lumber to build things. This is a picture of some logs that are on a road in San Jose, Costa Rica's capital.

Bamboo grows very fast. In Costa Rica, they use it for building materials. They use it for building because it is very strong and flexible. Costa Rica has the best quality bamboo.

Jack Bill Found!

A man, who has been wanted for some time now, has been captured. You probably have heard of him. His name is Jack Bill. He jas been known for killing many young girls. He has been on the run for a couple of years now. He just struck again last night. Reporters say that they were two teenage girls out Christmas shopping and Bill snatched them and slit their throats and fled from the scene. The person’s name who helped capture him could not be released at this time. We here at the Diario Extra haven’t got any personal information yet. Sorry for the inconvenience, but we should have that information in a couple of days. We will inform you, but if not, it is because the person does not want his/her name given out.

Jack Bill was found near a drug store. Reporters say that he was found unconscious from a drug overdose (DO). Apparently, he was taking Crystal Meth. He is currently in the hospital. As soon as he gets out, he will immediately be taken to prison and then executed. He is currently being checked for how much exactly he has taken of Crystal Meth and if that’s why he has been killing the teenage girls. People are also saying that he might be taking the drugs to try and kill himself so he wouldn’t have an awful life. I will have another article later this week. Keep reading, Costa Rica.

Costa Rican Coach Wants to Win World Cup

Hernan Medford is the new national team coach for Costa Rica. He took over the role on Tuesday and sid his goal was to win the World Cup. Costa Rica have played at three World Cups but have never go past the second round.

“You have to aim if you want to fly high and you have to put out positive vibes, “Medford said to reporters.

Hernan Medford is thirty-eight years old. He played in the 1990 World Cup. “If we had the same environment and stadiums that they have in Mexico, we would be challenging the best; you can’t play good in soccer on poor pitches.” Medford said

Medford thinks that the age of him and his players wouldn’t influence his team selections. He says that it doesn’t matter if you’re 15 or 85, you’re going to play. Hernan Medford is very dedicated to his job. He has instincts that his team will win.

Hugo Chavez calls George Bush "the devil" in U.N Speech

When George Bush had visited Venezuela he gave a very harsh speech to the people of Venezuela. After, the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez gave a speech. In his speech he had called George Bush “the devil himself.” Hugo Chavez also said it still smelled like sulphur because George Bush had left the sent of sulphur. Which is very dangerous. Sulphur could weaken your sense of smell. Chavez thinks that George was talking as if he owned the whole world. As if he could take over his country.

People say that Chavez also criticized Pope Benedict XVI Wednesday. He was saying that he found the priest’s remarks about Islam and holy war “worrisome”. People are also saying that the Bush administration had made its methods against Cuba more hostile.

This is Costa Rica in it’s rainy season. As you can see, Costa Rica can get a little foggy at some times. There is so much forest in Costa Rica. It is so bushy.

Costa Rica has tropical and subtropical climate. Their dry season is December to April. Their rainy season is May to November. It is cooler in the highlands of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a great place to visit.

Costa Rica Communication

Costa Rica communicates by the telephone, cellphones, television, and a radio. They also talk directly to the person’s face. Most Costa Ricans speak in spanish. All of these communication tools look exactly like ours here in Canada. Except there might be a little bit more high-tech communication tools here. For example, the cellphone. There is way more different types to choose from here. They all also have way more qualities.

Costa Rica has many industries. They are microprocessors, food processing, textiles and clothing, construction materials, fertilizer, and plastic products.

Costa Rica only has one natural resource. The natural resource that they have is hydropower.

Costa Rican Transportation

Costa Rica has 157 airports. Only 32 runways are paved. Their cars are the same as our cars here in Saskatchewan. They have the steering wheel on the left and they look like the cars we have here too.

There are 7 provinces. They are Alajuela, Cartago, Guanacaste, Heredia, Limon, Puntarenas, and San Jose. San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica. The population of San Jose was 309,672 in the year 2000. As you can see, San Jose is located in the middle of the country.

Location

Costa Rica is located in Central America. It borders both the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean. It is between Nicaragua and Panama. Nicaragua is to the North of Costa Rica and Panama is to the South. Costa Rica’s population in July, 2006 was 4,075,261. Costa Rica is a bottleneck. A bottleneck, if you didn't know is a narrow, entrance passageway.
